Darling Voodoo Dolls Due To Tax Stand Still

After the lobbying and protests outside of parliament last week to lower land based bingo hall tax rates, the Government has not budged on the issue. Bingo fans and industry insiders wanted the Government to backtrack on its 7% increase in tax to the industry introduced in the last budget and reduce the tax back to 15%.

Unfortunately the rate will now remain at 22%, a much higher rate that it’s bookie and casino counterparts.

Bingo players feel that they are being ‘stabbed in the back’ by the government and a Chester bingo hall has retaliated by making voodoo dolls of Alistair Darling.

Gemma Morgan said in the Chester Chronicle, “Alistair Darling is stabbing in the back the very people who put him and the Labour party in power. Now we want him to know how it feels. If he doesn’t keep bingo tax at 15% then we’re worried that clubs like ours could close”.

Bingo halls are currently closing at an alarming rate and a reduce in tax seemed to be a shining light, now the industry must seek to ways to avoid closures and cope with the breakdown of communities that goes with it.

More Gala Job Losses

45 more job losses have been announced since the 300 unveiled previously during the week and the closure of bingo halls at Gala Coral. This time headquarters has been hit the most, in particular marketing operations.
The move is to streamline and integrate both land and online aspects of the business in order to save money due to the current economic downturn.

The effects of the redundancies has not yet been felt, however it will more than likely show through more and more as the weeks progress.

Gala Coral will save £10m after this initiative is compete. The company has reported debts of over £2.5 billion and is desperately trying to save money wherever they can.

Online bingo fans need not fret yet though, we have been assured that the online part of the business will run as normal whilst the moves go ahead.

Bingo Fans hold Protest in London

Bingo Fans from around theUK have held a protest in London after the government announced another increase in taxes on the already struggling industy.

Large numbers of local halls have struggled to cope with the huge amouts of taxation handed to them by the governement. This coupled with the rise of online gaming sites has resulted in a visitor numbers at halls falling. The smoking ban also forced many to play bingo using internet sites in the comfort of their own home.

Taxes have recently risen from 15 % to 22 %, but this has not been forced on the Casino or Betting industry. Avid bingo fans claim this is a sexist move and have shown their disapproval by staging a protest outside the House’s of Parliment.

The story also reached the BBC 10 0 Clock news yesterday and we wish the protester’s all the best in their campaign!
