Bingo Sales Increase Despite Recession

The UK Gambling Commission has released their annual report revealing that online bingo sales have increased despite the country being in the midst of recession. The report shows year on year sales have increased by 4.6% in 2009 indicating despite financial hardship people are still drawn towards the game.

The number of operators registered with the UK Gambling Commission has in fact dropped from 2224 to 2166 this year with land based halls dropping to 641 from 675.

The online bingo market has remained competitive offering aggressive rewards and by investing heavily into TV advertising campaigns.

As with any industry when the climate gets tough the smaller companies go first with many land based bingo halls closing as a result. Even though Gala and Mecca bingo has seen many closures, they still have sizeable market share.

It remains surprising that bingo both in halls and online are both on the rise despite economic difficulties with a 4.6% rise in sales last year.

It is not surprising. Bingo is a safe way to gamble and have fun with friends. I feel bad that many of the large bingo halls are closing. It is fun to go out for the evening and meet with friends. I prefer to play in a hall than online.
